In part because I graduated from my Bachelor of Music Program at Boston University in 1963, but also as an educator (Brown University, 1970-75) and observed the liberal arts curriculum first hand (Brown University), I believe that educational programs should incorporate the study of art into other disciplines. So it's no surprise that the ethnomusicologist, who holds a doctorate as well as an MA from UCLA is enthusiastic about the arts. The ethnomusicology course, which was started at UC Berkeley in 1975-1976, is conveniently located in the department of music in a College of Letters and Science. I enjoy pursuing multiple interests as well as seeing the larger image. It's great to teach both graduate and undergraduate students. I am a published author of three books: Music in India: the Classical Traditions; Thinking Musically and Music in Japan, Experiencing the Music of Expressing Culture. There are times when I pursue primarily professorial activities in addition to periods of administrative work to the mix (Chair of the Department of Music 1983-88, Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-1998, Chair of the Deans in the College of Letters and Science 1994-1998, Chairperson of the Group of Asian Studies from 1999, and Chair of the Department of Music again).
